Critical Daylight Savings Time Updates

New Daylight Saving Time Changes
Beginning in 2007, Daylight Saving Time starts on the second Sunday in March (March 11, 2007), and changes back to standard time on the first Sunday in November (November 4, 2007). This is a change from the current start/end date that is built into some Palm devices.

Update your device to reflect the correct time when the new DST changes take effect. Without the Daylight Saving Time Updates, calendar events and email messages will indicate an hour off the actual time in locations that observe DST.

Time zone associated calendar events depend on the correct DST rule on the device and all users should apply this update. Third-party applications may also depend on the correct DST rule on the device.

Windows Users

How to Determine if you are affected

Mac Users

Use Automatic Updates to ensure your computer is up to date with DST updates from Apple

What All Users need to know before you begin:

  • All users: Verify that Calendar events on your Palm device and desktop computer coincide
  • Palm Desktop users: You may experience shifting Calendar events during the periods of 3/11/07 to 4/1/07 and 10/28/07 to 11/4/07.
  • All users: In the event of a hard reset, this update will need to be installed and run again on your device.
  • Windows users: Before you install the Daylight Saving Time Update, you may need to install two Microsoft updates in order for your system to reflect the DST rule changes.

Microsoft.com: Preparing for Daylight Saving Time changes in 2007

What does this update do?

  • Replaces the old DST rule with new DST rule on your smartphone or handheld.
  • Then it notifies the Date & Time application that DST rule change occurred.
  • Replaces the old DST rule embedded in any Calendar events that occur after March 11, 2007 (when the DST change begins). This allows events within the DST rule change window to remain at their original times.

Step 1: Update your Computer

(These instructions are for Windows 95, 98 and ME)
According to the Microsoft website, for Windows 98, you will need to do the following:

  1. Click the Start button and then click Control Panel
  2. Double-click Date/Time in Control Panel
  3. In the Date/Time window, click the Time Zone tab
  4. If checked, click to clear the “Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes” checkbox
  5. Click the Date/Time tab and manually adjust the system time to the correct day and time. To finish, click OK

These steps will need to be repeated twice a year, prior to the second Sunday in March and on the first Sunday in N

ovember.

Step 2: Back up your Calendar Files
Now create a backup file of your Calendar Events “just in case!”

  1. If you want to make an occasional backup of your data on your Windows computer (a very wise decision), the Palm Desktop application can do it for you.
  2. Launch the Palm Desktop for Windows application, if it's not already open.
  3. From the User pulldown menu in the upper right corner of the screen, select the user name of the data you want to export.
  4. Open the Palm Desktop component from which you want to export (Calendar). You must be displaying the calendar to export from it. (On a Mac, you will choose the file type from within the dialog window that appears when you click on export in the dropdown menus.)
  5. From the File pulldown menu, select Export ...

In the Export window, choose these settings:

    • File name: Pick a name for the exported file, and a location. It's usually best to store it in a separate folder from your other Palm Desktop data. You might want to create a new folder on the Windows Desktop for your exported data.
    • Export type: Depending on which component you're exporting (In this case Calendar), you may have a choice for exporting the data in the component. Generally, comma-separated variable (.csv) and tab-delineated (.tab) formats can be imported into most other Personal Information Managers (PIMs), planners and spreadsheets.
    • Range: All (unless you only want to export items you have pre-selected by highlighting them).
    • Click Export to begin the export.

For future reference, make sure you remember where you saved the exported data.

Step 3: Installing the Palm Update

  1. Go to your Palm website: http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/dst_palmos.html
  2. Download the file you will need. DSTUpdater.prc
  3. Decompress the downloaded file to a temporary folder, using one of these decompression utilities: WinZip, StuffIt, PKZIP, or Windows default.
  4. Double-click the file you decompressed: DSTUpdater.prc. The Palm Install Tool will appear. If asked, select your user name that corresponds to the intended device.
  5. Perform a HotSync operation to move the file to your device.
  6. Once you've synchronized, go to Applications .
  7. Tap on the application named DSTUpdater (DSTUpda…)
  8. Tap OK on the screen that appears

Your Palm device is now updated with the new DST rules.
