Adding Links to Uncreated Pages

There will be situations where you will want to create a link to a page that does not exist yet. For example, before you create a section using a horizontal navigation bar, you can create one page with the correct links and then copy the page to create the rest of your section. This will save creating individual links on individual pages.

To add a link to a page that doesn’t exist, you must decide what the name of the page will be and which folder you will publish the file to. Example: You will create a link to a page you are going to make called Principal’s Newsletter in the principal section of the site. In the blue navigation bar, type in the text Principal’s Newsletter. Highlight the text. Click on Link Button.

From the List, choose Browse to a Web Page. In the dialogue box that appears find the line above the Browse button. Type in the following:

../principal/prinnewsletter.htm

This means that you are linking to the current site, the principal folder and the specific page named prinnewsletter.htm.

You will need to repeat this process for any other links that you wish to have on multiple pages in the same section of your website. You should consider all of the links you want in one section before creating your second page.

Creating an Index Navigation Bar:

For your home section or index page, consider creating horizontal links to:

About Us  -  Directions -  School News

Remember to create some type of visual break between the links. A dash or extra spaces may do the trick.

Since these pages are to be created in the Home folder or “SchoolName” folder, the path will be shortened. Highlight “About Us”. Click Link. Choose “Browse to a Web Page.” Type in ../aboutus.htm  Highlight “Directions” Repeat previous the steps typing in ../directions.htm Finish by highlighting “School News”, repeating previous steps, and typing in ../schoolnews.htm

Publish your index page to the original folder. (See Publishing Pages) Be sure to create pages with the file names you used in this exercise. (See Copy from Current Page.)
