Technology for Teachers
ŌUsing the Web EffectivelyĶ
Knox County Fall 2005
This class will focus on
facilitating higher-order and critical thinking skills among students through
web-based technology-rich lessons.
Equipment Used in Course
Hardware: Apple
OS X, Windows XP, Digital Camera, Scanner
Software:
Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, AppleWorks (Macintosh only)
CD Burning software that comes with Apple OS X and Windows XP.
Attendance:Class participants are expected to attend each
class. If circumstances
occur that precludes class attendance, the participant
is responsible for discussing with the instructor ways
to makeup the class time.

Session 1: Registration
and Organization
Introduction
to Eagle Online
Registration
forms must be turned in during this session.
All
transcripts must arrive by September 7, 2005 in Cookville at the Tennessee
Technological University Office.
Session 2: Content: Introduction to hardware and software used in the course, to the components of a good Webquest, to good
questioning techniques found in BloomÕs Taxonomy, and the location of Webquests using different search engines
such as Google at http://www.google.com/ or Vivisimo at http://biometacluster.com/ as well as specific websites such as
In-class Activity: Locate several Webquests on the internet. Find webquests that have good questioning techniques.
Study the components that make up
a good Webquest. Choose one
that you could use in your classroom, and try it.
Assignment:
Select a Webquest from the internet
that would be appropriate
for your subject area and grade level.
Try it with a group
of students. Write a reflective
summary evaluating the effectiveness
and/or usefulness with your students.
The summary is
due at
the beginning of Session 3.
Session
3: Content: Review
BloomÕs Taxonomy, navigate the internet, and
webquest
following a template given to you by your
instructor.
In-Class
Activity: Individually or as a group, complete the Webquest template
provided by the instructor. The Webquest can be created with Microsoft Word,
Microsoft PowerPoint, or AppleWorks (Macintosh only). Pictures for your Webquest can come from the following
sources: clip art gallery, CD,
digital camera, scanner or the internet.
Assignment: Locate
3 Webquests using a
search engine, or go to http://bestWebquests.com. Evaluate
each Webquest using the

evaluations are due at the beginning of Session 4. Please pay close attention to whether or not the Webquests
contain higher level thinking skills and/or good questioning techniques from
BloomÕs Taxonomy.
Session 4: Content: Review
BloomÕs Taxonomy/Higher Order Thinking Skills, the main components of a
Webquest, and the creation of a webquest.
In-Class
Activity: Select a content area, and
develop some questions for a Webquest, and be sure to include questioning
techniques from BloomÕs taxonomy.
Use the components of a good webquest: Introduction, Task, Process,
Evaluation, Conclusion and Credits. Locate Internet resources to help complete the activity or to
answer the questions. There will be a small in-class group meeting to critique
your work.
Assignment: Create an original Webquest using BloomÕs
questioning techniques. Make sure the content area is relevant to your teaching

Session 5: Turn in final
assignment-reflection and closure.
